Jared Wagenhauser This video really gave me an insight to what really goes on in the brain of a person with autism. I known for a few years that some of our worlds smartest are/were autistic but for someone to really break it down into how differently we process information makes me understand it that much better. I feel with the right programs kids with autism can invent things that help the world.
This video also gave me insight about the minds of people with autism. I had hardly known many of our smartest people were on many different areas of the autism spectrum. In fact, my cousin has autism and thinks in patterns better than anything else. Because of this, he is very good in math but suffers in English. With the right programs for him, he could find a career with mathematics that he could do very well in. -Kevin Lingle
i agree with jared that this video gave insight, and i agree that the worlds smartest people are often times autistic. he hit some of the points i was missing in my comment, and his comment really helped me to see that even people without autism can think differently, and how certain people remember certain parts of the speech better. -cole fornwald
I agree that this video provided a view into the mind of an autistic person. Before this video I wasn't aware of how many of the smartest people were autistic. Lastly, Kids with autism need programs to interest them in something that can lead them to a good career in the future.
I thought Grandin's speech was interesting in that she presented autism not as something that is detrimental and something to just be dealt with but as something that can even be beneficial. She presented autism as just another way of thinking, not any worse than "normal" thinking patterns, just different. I think it is important to keep this in mind when both studying the brain and teaching children and adults on the autism spectrum. There is still a stigma surrounding autism in many people's minds, and it was refreshing to see someone showing how autistic people can flourish if we understand how to help them grow.
I agree wholeheartedly that it is nice to see a new take on autism. As someone with an uncle with down syndrome, I understand how stigmas are placed on those who think differently from the masses. Taking the work of people like Grandin and showing the ways in which different thinkers can contribute and help society can help us expand our society in the long run.
I agree with you. In her speech, Temple didn't mainly focus on what people on the autism spectrum can not do, she focused on their strengths and when in more detail about the differences between learning styles and I thought that was really great. Amber Wiederhold
I agree that there is no normal thinking pattern in the world, and that their should be a positive outlook on autism instead of looking at it as a disability.
I agree with you, Sarah. It's great she is trying to destigmatize autism. I liked how she went into depth on how to help them instead of just putting them in a classroom with things that do not interest them. Who wants to learn about things that don't interest them anyway?
I believe that many of the things that Grandin said were very good. We do need to be able to expand our world and our schools to accept that not all learning is done in the same way. Having different kinds of minds can help us look at world issues in a different way, so that we don't miss an obvious solution. Autistic children are entitled to the same caliber of education that everyone else is, and they should be encouraged to explore the world in ways that make sense to them. The brain is an extremely complex and amazing organ, and the autistic brain is only different in that it works in a slightly different way.
Arianna - I like how you pointed out that it only works in a slightly different way. Many people dont think of it that way, but thats truly all it is. That was a very good way to put it. Your paragraph was well thought out and explained the video very nicely.
I agree with your statement our generation needs more options for other kids to learn in different ways.If minds were all the same their would be no specific detail to anything.By encouraging kids to learn by pictures and hands on it will expand our worlds thinking to a whole new level.I also feel as if autism helps the world create new ways of teaching and helping other students get a chance to excel in life and become successful.
I agree that children with autism should have the same education opportunities. I love your point saying that autistic students should be encouraged to explore the world in their way. I believe that if this is done we will have a lot more students being successful in school and this will help our society be better as a whole.
I agree with the idea that autistic children should be encouraged to explore the world in ways that make since to them. The negative connotation attached to the word "autism" should be abolished. They aren't "slow" or "stupid" but merely happen to think and perceive things in a different manner. The fact that they are entitled to the same caliber of education as everyone else makes them struggle, as they cannot perform nor view things the way the majority of people do. I believe autistic individuals need to be taught in a manner that is best for them, in order to utilize their way of thinking in the correct manner. I'm sure if we were to do this, these people would achieve great things to society such as new ideas and technological advancements.
I agree that not all learning is done in the same way, we even take learning tests in school to find out what type of a learner we are. Having different types of minds is important when looking at important issues so you can see everyone's perspective and ideas. I also agree that with the right assistance autistic kids will be able to have the same education as everyone else.
I agree with everything you said, there are so many people that think negatively about autism. They think differently just like everyone else in this world. We tend to push aside their learning disabilities instead of understanding how to teach them ways they can excel. Like you said, they contribute so many ideas to our society and we need to pay attention to that. -Caylie Clements
I think that her talk was very inspiring, and should be taken seriously by teachers across the country. Some Autistic kids have different minds and if you take the time to sit down with them and help them learn in a way that best suits them, they are capable of having a good profession when they are older. She mentioned that Art was her best subject, and that schools shouldn't be getting rid of art classes. I 100% agree with her. Her mind allows her to see everything in pictures, but how would she be able to recreate them or explain them without art? Just because art isn't a core class, doesn't mean some kids don't develop skills from taking it, or that you cant link other subjects into art. Schools should be putting precedence on taking art, not getting rid of it.
I agree that we need to keep classes like art, music and vocational. These classes are considered electives and unfortunately are typically the first ones cut.
I agree that the process of helping autistic kids to flourish starts with the schools. It seems like many kids with mental disabilities aren't given the patience and time they need.
I agree that schools should not be getting rid of art classes because some people enjoy art and it really speaks to them. If kids do not have art they might not be able to do things in the future, like developing certain skills. -Kylie Carnicom
i feel that this person is right about autistic peoples and brain wiring, and that maybe if teachers and educators focused on teaching these people according to what they are good at they could succeed like she said, its just a dream to think that all autistic children could succeed like she said but there could be the next big tech entrepreneur out there who just thinks different however fails because their teachers didn't care.
I completely agree that teachers should help these kids out and adjust their teaching styles for them. I think if they would bring in mentors, like she said in the speech, then a lot more autistic kids could be widely successful.
I Also agree that teachers should adjust their teaching styles so that autistic children can learn and achieve more. There could also be more teachers to help these kids because they think and see things differently than we do
I thought her ideas and feelings about autism were very strong and she really wanted people to listen to what she had to say about it. She explains the different ways people with autism learn and think, which is mostly visual. She gave advice to parents about how they should attend to their child with autism to find what they are interested in and interpret it into all the learning they do so it becomes easier. I thought she had great ideas and proved that just because someone is a little different than everyone else they can still accomplish major things in life.
I agree with you about people who are different and can still accomplish many great things! The best people are the ones that are different, not the followers.
After watching the video I realized how different people and minds think. It's interesting that people that have autism think with visual thinking and learn visually. If we didn't have all of the different types of minds and thinking in the world then we wouldn't have been able to create many of the things we have today. People with autism really put a different perspective on learning and thinking which the normal brain wouldn't understand. -Kassie Brandon my computer wouldn't let me sign in
I totally agree that people with autism have brought many great things to this world. We as a whole, forget that they are people too and don't take their ideas seriously. Grandin did say that Einstein would be diagnosed with autism today.
I agree that it is interesting learning about how autistic brains think differently, and all the different types of thinking that the autistic brain can do.
I agree with you, autistic kids and adults really help me understand how fortunate we are. They have developed a lot of different solutions and have developed a lot of different products. Their specific detail they use helps them invent things and put different pieces together.
Alyssa Lopez Autism is a visual leaning system the way they think is by pictures and more details then the normal brain. If you have a child with autism you must start their social skills as soon as possible by using stuff they love to do because if you don't start now it will be harder later on.you must use that fixation in order to motivate them. Her video is explaining that we need to help with them by getting the interested into something to be become successful, these kids cant be told just one word tasks you need to have every detail and more specifics for them they need something they can visualize or something hands on learning to want to complete the tasks.
Watching this video made me think that as a society we need to learn new ways to teach autistic students, they need to learn in the best way for them. This includes not getting rid of the visual classes like art or orchestra. These kids excel in these classes and getting rid of them could be very bad for their schooling. In elementary school I was friends with an autistic boy in my class and he learned in a very different way than I did. He needed every day to be the same, the same seat, class, and times. Whenever something was different he got very anxious. Seeing this first hand shows me that these kids need to be taught differently than just writing notes and taking a quiz. They need to see the visual side of things, drawing pictures, making models, or listening to music. These kids can be very successful if we give them the right tools to excel in the way they need.
I agree, everyone learns different and it is especially hard with a disability like autism. Most kids with autism have the same issue with having to have everything be the same. I strongly agree with your point that we need to give people the right tools for how the learn.
Autism is a visual leaning system the way they think is by pictures and more details then the normal brain.
I think she did a good job explaining and talking about autism and how there minds work differently than ours. I like when she said the world needs different kinds of minds to work together. My brother has aspergers and when he was little he would always want to draw and he was not very social, but it doesn't affect him as much as when he was little, he is in the Air Force now.
I agree entirely with her opinion and stances on autism and brain wiring. I believe the world does need many different kinds of thinkers to work in harmony in order to progress and develop into the future. All these different thinkers, whether they be Photo Realistic Visual, Pattern, or Verbal, help to create new inventions, ideologies and technological advancements to society. I also agree that those with autistic minds need to be cultivated and trained to develop properly, not neglected. The word autism is usually perceived with a negative connotation, when in reality, it is thanks to many of these individuals that the world has progressed to where it has today. People who think differently all contribute something important to society.
I agree that people perceive autism negatively,it should be more of a positive thing or just another way to that people think rather than a disability.
I agree with your comment, many people believe that autism is bad in reality it is not. They give us many thoughts and ideas that people without autism could not. People just think differently and the people on the spectrum are just a set of people that have one set of thinking and there are other sets of people that have other different ones.
This video made sense to me in the fact that I have an autistic cousin who thinks almost entirely in patterns and is usually focused on one thing at a time. He struggles with reading but knows his daily schedule to a tee and what exact times he takes his medications. He excels in math but has a hard time in reading. When he was younger, he was always obsessed with cars. Everything of his was related somehow to cars. He gets so focused that he mows the grass in his five acre yard over and over again, sometimes twice a week. I was surprised to learn that lots of teachers hardly know what to do with smart kids who show signs of autism. I like her ideas about finding their specific talents and where they excel and challenging them in those areas. My cousin could do very well in a math related career. Her work with the cattle and horses also interested me. It was fascinating how they think visually and with smells and hearing because they don't have language. -Kevin Lingle
It´s weird how it works, I have an older cousin and he has downs syndrome, he went to whitmer and he graduated but since his mind wasn´t working as fast as the other kids he graduated a couple years ago but it was 3 or 4 years after his class graduated and everything in his life has to do with barney, he only plays with barney.
I never knew that people with autism could have such brilliant minds. Although they may not work like a normal mind this allows them to think more visual in ways normal brains can't. I have a six year old cousin that has autism, much like the speaker said in the video he is constantly focused on one thing which would be his video games. At family functions he won't go and play with the other kids, but he will just stay by himself and play his games. Although he is only six years old his mother has told me that he gets really good grades, I just haven't made the connection of him being brilliant before. All in all I think with the right guidance autism minds can help normal minds think in many new ways and form many new ideas.
I feel like i have a better understanding and knowledge of the autistic mind than I did before I watched this Ted talks. I really enjoyed looking at the scans of the brain and how Temple's brain was much different than the control brain. I didn't know that people on the spectrum think in specific pictures like when you google images, and that they can turn those images into videos. I thought that was really cool that they popped up one by one in her mind. I also didn't know that some people with autism are not verbal at all. I think that more people and teachers should watch this video so that they can learn even more about how they can help their students learn better and be more successful and interested in school. Amber Wiederhold
I agree with you, I have a better understanding of autism after watching this TED talk. The scans of the brain also helped give a better understanding, as I was able to see the difference and compare. I also didn't know some autistic people can't talk at all. It is super important for this video to be shared to raise awareness and inform people that people with autism just have a different way of thinking and that they still have potential.
I found this video to be very interesting because all different kinds of people can relate to this. We sometimes forget that autism comes in different levels: from non-verbal communication to brilliance. I babysit an autistic boy who is 8 years old. He doesn't talk at all and is still in diapers. Even though he can't communicate verbally with me, he understands what I'm saying. It's frustrating because his mom is so caring and she feels helpless. Last summer I watched him 3-4 days a week. I became someone familiar to him, but he still can't talk to me. Now instead of trying to talk, he just grabs my hand and shows me what he wants. He knows right from wrong and thinks it's hilarious when you try to punish him. I think this video will really help us understand people with autism, that they have feelings too and how much they have to offer to this world.
Autism is a subject that everyone needs to learn more about, and get to understand it. Autistic kids tend to think in detail, if you say a object,or a place, they will think of a lot of different specific pictures playing like a slideshow in their head. They have a "internet" trunk twice the size of you and I. They also have extra wiring in their thinking part of the brain vs. social. We need to learn all the different types of minds they have. They can have a specialist mind, a pattern thinking mind, a verbal mind, a word mind, etc. Autistic kids tend to have a fixated mind, which means they are obsessed with one thing. Teachers and parents need to use that object to help them learn. You have to give autistic kids specific tasks, get them to do interesting things to get them engaged. Animals think with sensory information and put that information into categories. They take pieces of the puzzle and put them together. If a horse got abused by a person who wore a black hat they do not like anyone who wears a black hat, but if you wear a white hat you are fine. Language covers up the visual thinking we share with animals. My mom works at a school called the School of Hope, it is a school for all aged kids and adults with disabilities.
It sounds like you have had many positive interactions that has allowed you develop a good understanding of how the autistic brain is wired. Good job Mom for working with those great kids!
I loved her talk about autism. I agree completely with the mentor idea, I have three cousins that have autism, two are older than me and one is younger. My younger cousin is who I babysit in the summer, I know that he has to have things go a certain way or he gets upset. A mentor would really help autistic kids. My cousins are super smart. My older cousins graduated in 2014 and are super smart, they are really good with art and love to do it. Autistic kids are super smart and do their work thoroughly. My younger cousin plays baseball, soccer, and is "water boy" for his friends football team. The coaches would be an example of a mentor to him because they help him out and know that hes autistic so they work with him and help him improve. Autistic kids do think differently than the rest of us, they remember detail and see things differently than the rest of us do. Like she said she seen things like the flag, shadows, and other things that would set the cows off, that was very observant because in all honesty, I probably would never think of that stuff or even notice it.
Eli Stevens I think that it is cool that some autistic people actually think in pictures. Thinking in pictures could allow someone to picture how something will work. They can't use their frontal lobe as much, but they can use their occipital lobe even more.
I agree with you completely, I think its so cool that they think visually. They can visually think something through so that they know what might happen, even if there is some bad in the idea. It really is neat that they can use their occipital lobe more than their frontal lobe.
She said in this video how schools aren't helping the autistic learn in the way their brain works. That teachers aren't showing the autistic kids interesting stuff to make them want to learn. That schools are getting rid of the geometry and trig classes for those kids. Her science teacher was her mentor, and made her want to study. I think all schools should have those teachers that show you cool and interesting things to intrigue you. Kids with autistic think in pictures, and are just as smart or even smarter than everyone else, but need to be taught to use that to their advantage. Teachers or mentors can help them by showing them intriguing stuff to draw them in and help them find a career that they will be successful in. I think our school does a good job with this, because they give the kids the opportunity to take other classes such as geometry and upper level math classes until they need the extra help. We let them choose the classes that interest them.
I agree with you, our school has not cut those important classes out which is very beneficial for everyone especially autistic students. They are very smart and just need to have the information brought to they in a different way.
Yes David i agree with you on the aspect of how schools need to be more active in making sure they allow students to explore what interests them. Our school does do a good job of this with out many ceramics, auto shop, and computer classes.
Temple´s lecture on autism made me realize that some children need a different way of learning in order to excel. In order for children to do their work, teachers need to be showing students interesting things. Also children with autism need help in socializing, because they are so brilliant and their brain is not wired correctly to do both. Grandin also stated that schools now a days are taking away the hands on classes, and children with special needs need those classes to learn.
I agree with you about how children needs hands on learning classes to learn because some of the smartest people in the world had autism and they had some type of hands on skills which made them so good at what they did.
I agree with you on the way teachers teach. They don't take in consideration that the minds and brains are wired differently and not everyone can learn the same way.
I completely agree that teacher's need more of different learning techniques that accommodate autistic needs. Autistic people can be very intelligent if they have the right learning styles that fit their needs.
Autism is not a topic many people know a lot about, that needs to change. It is extremely beneficial to understand how their brain functions compared to ours. Autistic people are taught and understand things best when we get away form language and use pictures, they think in individual pictures playing through their head. A huge worry is where younger students today are headed because of the lack in hands on work done at schools. Although most autistic people are visual thinkers not all are; there is pattern thinking, verbal mind and than photo realistic visual thinkers. Only in Autistic people will you find that the Gigantic Internet Trunk Line is twice as big. Those minds have all senses to different things and put info into categories in their mind. This world needs to use the different minds and have them work together, use fixations to teach different things because autism comes in all different ways.
I agree that it's beneficial to us and everyone to learn more about autism. People automatically assume that it's a terrible debilitating problem when really these people just think and understand things differently than us. I think it's good for us to understand that and be able to understand people with autism better. -Reagan Schmus
I thought it was really interesting to hear that a lot of schools have gotten rid of Drafting, auto shop and other art classes for autistic kids in schools, but here at Bedford we still have these types of classes available for everyone. Also these types of classes really help autistic kids think and become better learners in all kinds of ways from expanding their different types of skills that each individual is good at or skills that they need to become better at. If these are the types of classes that really helps autistic kids grow and become a better learners it really confuses me on why schools are not making it available for them to take these classes.
I think Temple Grandid's speech was very informational and showed me how most autistic kids think. I agree with her ideas of having more hands on learning in schools, I feel that technology does not teach autistic brains as well as hands on learning does. I also learned that autistic minds are more cognitive thinkers, rather than social thinkers, and that by being interactive with other kids and people, they can gradually become more social.
I completely agree with what you said because I don't think many people are aware how the autistic brain works and how important hands on learning is to them. Hopefully technology will advance in the future and better help people with the disease.
I really liked Temple Grandin speech, I felt it very informational and it kept me interested the whole time. Grandin showed how the autistic brain works and how differently they think. I liked how she presented autism with a positive look on it rather than looking at it like some people would say, a disability. I don't think it is in anyway a disability because some of the most intelligent people in history were autistic. Without people with autism, we wouldn't be this far in the world as we are today. Overall I enjoyed this video and it gave me a better insight on what autism is.
I do agree with tara that autism is not a disability. We today treat it so much as a disability when we need to be treating it as an opportunity for new ways of thinking and problem solving.
I agree with Tara due to the point about Autism being more of an ability rather than a disability. Also, the world would not be the same without these people because they have changed the world.
Grandin's lecture gave me a better understanding about autism than i had before. Also opened me up to the different ways in thinking. I understood that people learn in different way but i never realized we think in different ways too. As for myself i believe I'm a verbal thinker. Grandin really pushed for a reform in our educational institutions to not only help kids affected by autism but kids in general which i think is really important. She talked of keeping kids interest but the problem with that is our schools aren't equipped with resources to do so. Also i think she failed to recognize the autistic kids who aren't as "nerdy" and should of emphasized more on what to do to help understand them
I relate on your first comment. My whole life I never knew that other people were thinking in a different way than myself. I thought their decision-making and problem-solving process was the same as mine and that the only differences in people were that some were just faster or they just understood material easier or that their brains just simply had more information stored. And I agree with your last point, I feel she didn't cover the full spectrum of autism, rather just a section of it and how important they are to the development of this world.
I agree that schools need to broaden their teaching styles with autistic kids to fit their needs. Every person learns different and deserves teachers that will take the time to find what works best with them.
Claire Lietaert I thought that Grandin's speech was very informative. It was a speech that changed my perspective on autism for the better. Autism is often percieved as a bad thing to have, but in this video Gradin's speech tells the audience otherwise. While Gradin was giving her speech she mentioned many famous names such as Einstein, Tessela, Mozart, etc. that I never realized were people with autistic habits. This speech made me realize that autism is not as bad as I thought for a child and could actually make them become very successful in things that they try to do. The autistic mind is not bad, they just have a different thinking pattern than "normal", and more people need to be aware of this in order to help them grow into successful people. Autistic minds are very detail orientated and the world needs more people like this in it to help create new inventions and ideas.
I completely agree with you Claire. Before watching this video I understood that their thinking patterns were different but I wasnt sure how. I agree with how normally when a child is diagnosed with autism, we dont treat it positively when we should embrace their differences and try to understand their thinking patterns and get them involved in what they enjoy. We really do need more people like this and to embrace their thinking styles for the next new great idea or invention. They can put it to action with out help, and if we take time out to understand.
I agree it changed my perspective as well, and I think that autism people are capable of accomplishing great things. Autistic people just need more social skills taught to them in school to learn how to share their ideas with the world.
Just like you, I didn't realize that famous icons like you listed were affected with autism. That helped me gain a better understanding of how people with that disability could help further improve society, just as everybody should be able to. It takes away the emphasis on helping improve ways to help the general population learn but rather the group of people who are almost starting to get almost left behind or forgotten.
I agree that every child, student, and adult with autism or related situations are a huge element in creating a better world. When a person with a normal brain cannot solve it, they will and they will most likely do a better job. they see things for how they are instead of trying to go over the top.
I agree that schools need to work on social skills with autistic kids so that they can interact with more people. I also agree that teachers need to help with the fixation and find out what their students like to help them learn. Autistic minds are very complex and they need help to get a better understanding of certain things so the teaching staff at schools should be closely evaluated for their help.
I agree that more teachers should be evaluated before being able to call a classroom their own. Teachers should be able to teach in multiple ways to help different types of minds, or they should have multiple teachers in classrooms and they each should be given students that they know how to teach.
All through my life, I have known some of the effects of autism and the range of ways people with it can be affected. Grandin's speech helped me better imagine how autistic people actually think with personal experiences and images such as her brain compared to a normal brain. I have definitely noticed a difference in education for some children that have autism over the years through my volunteer work with some of these children as well as having two younger autistic cousins that are growing up together. I would like to see the schools work harder to help students of all learning/thinking types to benefit a larger group of students in school and the future.
I can't agree more on the fact the schools need to work more on helping the autistic kids be apart of what we do on our every day basis and less on the fact that they are different. Nobody thinks the same whether you have autism or not so why single them out?
I agree, I think that it's great that people are starting to understand that these kids who might have something like autism could be geniuses with the right style of teaching that is accommodated to them. Grandin did a great job with visual representations of how other kids might learn and see things.
I think that this is super cool because I related to a large part of this. She said, "I thought all children thought the same way all throughout my childhood," and I completely relate to that. I think visually (although I am great at algebra and maths, contrary to her experiences in her life) and I have always thought people thought the same way as me. I have always known I thought differently and more advanced than others at my age and I think very deeply about even the simplest of subjects, I just never knew how different or what made me think differently, and I never understood how other people thought. I have never been diagnosed with autism, but I know my cousin has so it is pretty cool to know that, according to this video, he thinks in a very similar way to me, and we are very unique and important to this world. I also thought her point at the end when she got asked the first question about her quote in a book talking about how if autism didn't exist, humans would still be in front of a cave and it really interested me just what autism has done for this world. So many influential and revolutionary icons in history that have been linked with autism, whether they studied it, or were just simply diagnosed with it.
I thought that Grandin's speech was very informative and straight forward. The speech focused on the abilities of people with Autism rather than the disabilities. She mentioned the need for art, music, and vocational classes within the curriculum along with the need to keep it throughout the entire spectrum of ones education. I loved that she explains the differences between the "types of brains" because no two people have the same exact thinking capacity or creative mindset. Knowing what i do now will help with how i look at people with Autism and how i help them on a daily basis.
I agree that it was a very informative and straight forward. You have a very good point on how all people have the same brain. I found that the way they learn is very interesting compared to normal brains
I think that Grandin’s speech really gave me more of an understanding of Autism. I never knew before what it was really like to have Autism, I’ve just seen it from people around me. I liked how the speech explained how the brain worked in an Autistic mind. And I agree that we need to create a fix for the students who have this in schools to fit their learning needs. When people use Autism as a thing to make fun of about someone, I find it very rude and disrespectful.
Hunter Winters I thought that Grandin's speech was very inspiring and informative. I agree with her when she says that we should not get rid of our art, and music classes, because for some people that is the only way they can learn. I think our society should be more excepting toward autism, because it is not a bad thing, it is just a different way of thinking that we may not understand. Our world needs more different ways of thinking, because if not we would not have the inventions we have today. I hope in the future we learn about how they learn so that they can feel more normal and not different than anyone else, because being different is a good thing.
Kaylee West I agree with you. In our world today, those who may not be the same as most are overlooked. Their desire to learn is just as great as someone who can read a piece of work and understand it. Sometimes it takes a new and creative approach to reach someone before they can truly understand the meaning behind what they are learning.
I think that the way she talked about how we need different thinkers in the world is very accurate. The world would be boring if everyone thought the same, and she showed us the different types of thinking that people with autism have. She mentioned a few people in her speech that were very successful that today would be considered to have something like autism. People automatically think autism is something bad or a terrible disability or an inconvenience, when really it's just how someone thinks differently. I've found this from working with people that have autism and a lot of them, if anything, are some of the happiest and nicest people I've come across. -Reagan Schmus
Grandin's speech made me thinks about autism in a completely new light. I have always been taught about how we learn differently but never about how we think. It was very cool to learn about the visual, pattern, and word thinkers. I have only heard people talking about autism as a bad thing but for some very successful people it is a great thing to have autistic habits. I really agree that we need to have more elective classes in the high school because how are kids suppose to learn about all of the different jobs and if they would be suited for them or not. This speech was very informative and it makes me now think of autism as a different way of thinking but not bad at all.
It made me think about it completely different too. I thought I knew some what about this condition but this video has shown the parts I havn't been taught, just like you said being taught about how we learn differently. I like how you said we need to have more elcetive classes and I could not agree more, that is a huge point that is lacking today.
This speech really helps to explain how autistic brains work differently, and the different types of autistic thinking. I like her ideas about how to better teach autistic people in school, which shouldn't be just how to teach autistic people but everyone because not everyone that doesn't have autism thinks the same way either. My sister wants to be a special-ed teacher so I think she would like to watch this. One thing I disagree about is when she sounds like autism is to credit every genius or really smart person in history.
I agree with this comment in that teachers need to understand that autistic children do not process information the same way that a normal thinking child would. We need to find ways to meet every childs expectation in order to create productive members of society.
Grandin's speech was extremely eye-opening. I think her points shared light on the actuality of autism. Autism often is viewed as someone without any social skills, and is often the outcast in society. I believe just because someone is quiet, or socially awkward does not mean their point of view should be taken lightly. Autistic people think differently than most ordinary people, and without the differences, three would be no change. Instead of pushing away their ideas, people should embrace what is said and really take into consideration that autistic people are not much different than you or I. Instead of pushing children with autism away, we need to find ways to help their talents and interest shine. They are the thinkers of the generations, and without the help of other's patience, persistence, and encouragement there would be no chance in seeing the things these people could accomplish.
Alex Zedan I agree completely with this. My cousins are often made fun of at their school for not being able to communicate as well as others. It was nice to see this video and know that its because they are thinking in a different way.
Very good points about just because someone is quiet or reserved does not mean that he/she should be ignored or taken lightly. this is about respecting everyone.
This video gave me a good incite about the autistic brain. I learned that they see more in pitcher rather than words and that they also pay close attention to detail more than an average human brain. I really liked how she explained that not all autistic people are the same and how there are many different cases of autism. I did not know that some of today's great scientist have autism and I think that is great because they are people to and should not be treated different.
Grandin spoke about things that I feel are not talked about enough. Too many teachers today do not try and work with the many different types of minds to actually help them achieve more in life. Instead, they teach to get through a lesson or to finish a chapter. There have been countless times where I did not understand something in math, for example. I would raise my hand to get help and my teacher would shut me down because we ¨need to move on¨. Autistic minds are great in the sense that they become our geniuses. They excel higher and become our scientist and painters and musicians. Grandin´s speech was very eye-opening. If more teachers were replaced with people like her, who try to help others fully understand things, no matter how they think, we would have more people able to shine and excel in life.
I am sorry you have had bad experiences. Have you thought about going to that teacher after school? Sometimes it is hard for teachers too because of requirements placed upon them from other governing bodies.
I thought that Grandin's talk was very good in the way she explained it and also just the major concept of it. She mentioned that people with autism can change the world and bring really great ideas to the world. Most people believe if somebody is autistic then they can not do much or be smart. She explained that people like that just think differently and can still be smart even though they have minor setbacks. Autistic minds can see the world more visually than verbally and without them we may have not seen as many of good artists or music composers because they can see the world in those ways. I thought it was good the way she explained it and believe that she could convert people to thinking that autism is not a bad thing.
I agree with what you said about Grandin being very informative in how she explained how people with autism think in different ways and how people without autism might think that the people with autism can't do as much but in fact they can do the same amount of stuff or more than what people without it can do. They are just as smart and can bring different, great ideas into the world.
I agree with what you said about how a lot of people view autism as a set back. Like she explained, being autistic just means their brains are wired differently. Just because we see things more verbally than visually doesn't make us any smarter. It's just a different way to view the world.
Her speech was very inspiring because she talked about how the world needs different minds to work together. She also talks about different types of thinkers and she explains how people process and think things different ways. I liked how she stated that even though some people are different from everyone else, they can still accomplish a lot. If Temple Grandin never would have mentioned she was autistic, I would have never known. She has accomplished a lot to get where she is today and I think that is great. Grandin had a lot of good ideas and proved a lot of things about the autism world. Also how art is an important subject to some people because it helps them develop skills they need in life. -Kylie Carnicom
I think she did a good job explaining the different aspects of an autistic person and how their minds work compared to others. The way she described the three different types of thinkers was really an eye opener for people who don't understand how someone with autisms' brain works. I found the picture of the control sensors to be really interesting because the size difference wasn't the same on a normal brain. I think it's amazing that someone with autism could pay more attention to the specifics of something than someone who does not have the disease. I definitely agree that mentors are a huge part in a autistic persons life because they need some kind of guidance to help them better understand what they are doing. I really like how passionate she was about telling this story because it made certain things about an autistic brain more eye opening.
After watching this video i gained a whole new perspective on how autistic minds work. It shocked me to see the difference between the brain of a person without autism in comparison to a person with autism the difference was tremendous. I feel that in high school kids with autism aren't given much of chance to show how intelligent their minds can really be. Every autistic kid has a different way of learning/ interpreting info. Teachers of autistic student need to conform their ways of teaching to what is best for the autistic student. Allowing autistic student to have a an equal opportunity to be successful than those without autism. I agree with what Temple said about autistic people being some of the most genius people we have on this earth today but i feel they arent given much of a chance to show it because few people understand the minds of those with autism. Overall i thought this video was very interesting to watch and it makes me think differently of some of my classmates that do have autism. I see a different potential for them.
I think that Temple Grandin's speech about autism and brain wiring was very informative. I shows that not everyone thinks alike and even if someone is different in some aspect, such as having autism, they can go on to do amazing things. They just think a little bit more creatively than people who are not familiar with autism. I also think that her speech could shed some light for people who might not know how to deal with different types of thinking styles, especially teachers and parents. Just like Temple said, if you try to build a relationship off of something that an autistic child likes or even obsesses about you will see a better result than making them do something the same way as everybody else.
Alex Zedan After watching this video I feel like I have a better knowledge on autistic minds. I have two autistic cousins that are younger, and I have always try to understand them but sometimes struggle. After seeing this video I have a better understanding of how they are thinking. When they are not talking to me or responding it is because the communication skills may not be there. Now I know if I keep trying they may start to speak more. This video also helped me see that both my cousins have very focused minds. When either of them starts to do something, they want to continue doing it. It usually is a video game or video that they will play over and over. The older one tends to point out the same things in a video multiple times and now I know why. His brain is focusing in on that one thing and he can remember the pictures and videos better than my conversation with him.
I think that educating the world on autism could help many people communicate with autistic people, just like it helped you. With people trying to help them and not giving up on them because it is difficult communicating with them, I think we would be growing many more brilliant minds. If education can be geared more towards every learning style, it would greatly benefit everyone, and would benefit our world greatly.
What Alex said is very true. From this video many people would pick up a whole new perspective for people that are in their family or school. If you keep trying to make an effort with them they eventually will start to make one back and that's very important to learn. Being patient with them will benefit your relationship with them and their learning abilities. Cassidy Heer
Jessica Jerzykowski I really liked this speech. I didnt really know a lot about autism and i didn't know that many famous people had some type of autism. I liked how she talked about the many types of ways that someone with autism can learn. I was shocked to find that many schools have taken out classes like auto shop and art that can actually help the autistic mind, I think it would be better to have more classes and have more ways for kids with autism to be more social and to get them to be more interactive with other kids in their schools. After watching this i would really like to learn more and even get to work with kids with autism.
I totally agree with Gradin's speech I feel like she fully helped people understand what happens in the mind of an autistic kid. One thing that I was truly amazed with was that she named off inventors and very smart people that had a big impact on this world that had autistic habit. You Can Do big things having autism. She mentions schools not doing hands on stuff and i agree all schools should be required to take a hands on class. We should all take the time to realize that just because someones learns different teachers need to take the time and make sure they understand and figure out how they learn. Having the mind of an autistic kid is very detailed and we are like them in some way
I agree with this post entirely. When she was naming all those inventors/painter I was very surprised to learn they had autism. People never focus on the successful autistic people. I feel people don't really focus on autistic people at all. Everyone is so self-centered these days it amazes me. I agree with teachers needing to be able to adapt to the style of learning for all students. They need to be able to think of and do a wide range of activities so everyone can benefit. Once again, I think that's where your environment can impact how well you learn. If you're in a school where teachers are willing to switch up their activities then you will be able to learn better.
This video has changed my perspective on people with autism completely. Instead of viewing autism as a disability, people should look at it as an alternate way of thinking.Autistic people think in pictures rather than in words and scenarios. The autistic mind just has a different way of thinking that we, the ones with "normal" minds, are just beginning to understand. It was interesting to hear that highly accomplished people such as Einstein and Mozart had some autistic habits too. The main statement from this video is that autism is not a bad thing and we as a society must learn how to teach and develope autistic children so they can achieve their full potential. -Seth Dolan
This video has changed the way I look at it also. I really liked how she said that without autism in the world that mankind would be sitting outside their cave trying to start a fire. Which I agree with because as you said a bunch of great minds that have really impacted world history and mankind have had autistic habits.
John Kraine- I think it is interest that people are moving away from viewing autism as just a disability and now see it as an alternative thinking condition. I also didn't know that many geniuses were autistic. The fact that people think in drastically different ways which has moved humanity forward is very interesting.
Meagan Walker I enjoyed Grandin's speech because she made key points about autism that we don't think about. For example, she said when she thinks of a steeple, she sees multiple images from various countries and places. When we think steeple, we see the generic steeple on a little white church. I really like that she said schools need to broaden the way they teach autistic children. Everyone in the world, whether they have autism or do not, learns differently and relates certain topics to learning. Trying to teach a subject the same way as another student is wrong. That's like telling a gold fish or an elephant to climb a tree. A monkey (or one student) might be able to complete that task. However the elephants, gold fish, and zebras of the class cannot. Students with autism are actually very smart despite the rumors that they are not. teachers need to take the time to find out how to bring out the intelligence in those students, it is vital that these students know they have a chance at success.
I felt that Grandin understands the meaning of Austism and realizes how important that everyone should know how important it is, even if they effected by it or not. Autism shows us that people who have it do not process information the same way we do, they get very attached to items. Austitc brains are born with one type of learning style so it makes it more difficult for them to learn new information. It it vital for them to have a mentor and gain new experiences at a young age to help their brain grow. I volunteered at an outreach center with autistic children and they were attached to items and did not want to try new learning styles, so I related watching this video.
I agree with you that it is very important that Autistic kids need a mentor with them. Since they do get attached to one thing it is important that someone with more experience helps them with other learning styles and to help them grow in different areas of their life.
Temple Grandins speech gave me a better out look on other peoples way of thinking. It showed me that Autism isn't a disability, just different way of thinking like everyone else who thinks in different ways. Yes, for a kid with autism it is a bit more challenging, but its because people only know how to teach the ways they were taught to teach. The autistic brain could be very successful if you fuel it right, and by having a change in educational environments this could happen, and not only would autistic minds grow, but so would everyone else.
At first I didn’t realize that Temple was autistic, I just thought that she was someone specialized in the field of autism. Not all autistic people show signs of autism, there is a spectrum and I liked how she explained it and how she showed it even if she didn’t do it intentionally. I think that having an actual autistic person on TED was more informative than it would have been if the speaker did not have autism. It felt more personal seeing her side and seeing first-hand how the education system is failing autistic children. We need to continue to teach the visual arts. This can be done by keeping classes such as art and drafting. Also by implementing visual arts into core classes by giving projects or using charts and graphs in note taking.
I really enjoyed Temple Grandin's lecture and believed it to be extremely informative while still holding my attention. I enjoyed this positive take on autism. Grandin spoke of how we need to help the autistic people in our society grow, and that they are beneficial to our growth, which I believe is very true. Autism has almost grown to have a negative connotation in some peoples minds, which shouldn't be the case. I stand with Grandin in believing we need to cherish our autistic peers and help them grow as much as possible. More things need to be done that are geared towards these members of our society in order to help them become the best they can be, they should be encouraged to explore new things and find what works best for them to become their best self. Before watching this video I did not know much about autism, or different ways of thinking on the spectrum. This TED talk really taught me a lot and changed how I view autism and my opinion on how to help those with autism excel in our world.
I agree with you completely. Autism is looked down upon as something that is a hindrance but after watching that talk in some ways its a benefit. People with autism can think in a way that people without it cannot and having them in this world has definitely brought a lot of positive changes.
i thought that gardins speech was very interesting, and i i have known that autistic people have a certain thing about them that helps them learn in a special way , and i agree that they need to have people who specialized in certain things to help them sothey can fully be aware of their potential.
I agree that autistic kids do not see the potential they have because they focus only on what they are bad at and people, such as teachers, only try to help improve the child in that one area, but they really should be teaching how to improve on what they are good at and use it to their advantage.
I really liked this video because I learned that things like autism and aspergers are a lot more common than we think. People who sometimes struggle with social skills could possibly have slight autism and just need to learn things differently. Some of these people could actually become great minds if they are motivated with the right learning style and teachers/mentors. It's really interesting how many different types of learning styles people have.
I highly enjoyed this lesson and believed that Temple Grandin is an example of how autistic people can be successful by using the gifts that they have. She went into great detail to explain the autistic mind and how it processes information differently than that of a normal person. She explains that autistic people process information visually and think from the ground up as if to piece the information together to come up with a whole outcome. This allows them to pay a great deal of attention to detail and makes them very productive members of society with jobs like construction and programming. This lesson made me value what my autistic peers have to offer and made me understand that they dont have the best social skills but with time and one on one interaction, they can be very productive.
First I would like to say before this video I did not know that Temple was autistic, as I thought she was just a specialist in the field. I like how she made key points about kids with autism that we way not think about all the time. I know many people that are on the autism spectrum and they are all in different places, she made it very clear on how they think and learn. In my opinion we need to stop shutting kids out with autism and help them grow in the world even if that means explaining things in way more depth than we normally would have.
Knowing two people in my family with autism, my sister and cousin, I can easily relate to what Temple Grandin was saying. The autistic brain is wired to do specific tasks and that one thing is replaced by another. For example, my sister is great at art but is only interested in drawing a certain style of drawings. Also, she lacks in social skills but exceeds in her artistic abilities. She also needs specific instructions on how to do a certain job in order to do it correctly or do it at all.
I find it very interesting that there are 3 different types or learners on the autism spectrum. I know someone very well that has a for of autisim, aspergers. And I have never really thought of the way he learns or thinks, but he does do a lot with music and patterns. That leads me to believe that he is a pattern learner. He loves math and that is his favorite subject. I find it very intriguing that when I study with him we learn different. I look at the words and try to remember them. He starts signing the words or making a song. Sometimes he even makes up a pattern and I look and think, hey that kind of works but it doesnt stick for me like it does him. He still remembers that a year down the road where I usually forget about it within a couple days. The autisim brain is very fascinating and different than ours.
I really think what she is doing is awesome. When she talks about how there are many different mind and that not everyone is the same, it made me think. I started to think how it is very true that not every person thinks the same way, and that schools need to account for all these different types of minds and ways of thinking. Like she said you need to have those art classes, those auto shop and graphic design classes for all types of people. Because one of those autistic kids could be the change one day. They could be the next great inventor because of their difference in thinking and reasoning. One of her quote i really liked, it was " Without autistic kids we man would still be in front of a wood fire in a cave". May this be totally true? of course not but it puts things into perspective that Autism and all these different types of thinking are what keep this world fresh and new. Autism isn't such a bad thing and we really need to spark these kids interest an ideas so that they can have a chance to make this world better
I agree with you on so many levels. Autism I feel is a touchy subject that some people are afraid to talk about because they may feel sorry for them. But what Temple does is she shows us all the valuable things autism has and can bring to this world, and I find her speech so educational for us.
I agree with you that not everyone thinks the same way and that schools need to figure out ways to fit the needs for everyone. Also, my sister is going to school to become a teacher for Autistic kids and I think it's an amazing thing.
Gretchen Metter I enjoyed Temple Grandin's lecture very much. In the beginning of the TED talk i had not realized she was autistic because sometimes it is difficult to determine. I love how Temple talked about the different ways people think. I know a girl who has autism but she excels in music and other areas of art. Another thing I liked about Temple's presentation was all the visuals because she told us about how she thinks with pictures so it brought a much more personal approach to the presentation.
Bradley Nichols 3rd Hour- This speech really opened my eyes. Before this video, I never truly knew what autistic people went through and how their brains processed ideas. After this speech though, I now know that an autistic person is very normal. They use images to create ideas, and for people without autism we may find it strange, but some of the most creative and intelligent minds in history had autism genes. The knowledge I picked up from this video is great, seeing what goes on inside the head of someone with autism. My favorite part about this video is when Temple gave the example of the cow farm that was about to shut down just because of the flag placement. With autism, you notice the little things more, and in this world that is actually very useful. I am very happy I got to watch this video, because it really gave me so much knowledge that I may be able to use down-the-line of my life.
I really enjoyed listening to Temple Grandin's speech about Autistic minds and how they work. It provided a lot of information that you would not normally think about when dealing with autistic children. I liked how they had Temple be the one to give the TED talk because she has autism and can tell us exactly how their minds think and how their thought processes work. She was saying that kids with autism need to be interested in something in order to relate to different problems or situations. I can understand this because in elementary school we used to have a program called Peer to Peer where we would spend time with kids who had special needs and they normally would not like to socialize or communicate unless we could relate it to something they were really interested in. Overall I found this TED talk to be very insightful.
I wonder why we do not have a peer listening program anymore. That was a great point you brought up. Does the program Mules Matter act like peer listening?
I thought that the video was great and Temple Grandin did a very good job with explaining what its like to have autism. She also have very good ideas on having autistic people to find a calling and somewhere it fit into. I´ve had experience with autistic children by coaching in Special Olympics. I agree the it can be difficult to understand the way they think in order to teach them something. You have to think out of the box and in detail. For example in order for me to teach a child how to walk across the balance beam and not fall, I had to explain why they had to use their arms to keep balance or they would not use their arms and fall. This video opened my eyes on how it is to be autistic.
Vito Lucarelli I think that this lecture has information that everyone should learn. I find it interesting to think of autism as just a different way a persons brain functions, rather than thinking of it as a disability like so many people do. I think that the world needs to be more accepting of autism, because as it was pointed out in the lecture, we would not be where we are today without it. IN today's business world there is a big push to get people together to solve the same problems from different standpoints. By bringing in a person with autism, we could solve many of the problems that face today's world by approaching things from a different mindset. This lecture also makes me think of the importance of how educators teach their students, and how many brilliant minds might be getting left behind because no one took the time to develop an autistic person in a way that would help them to be successful. I have a relative who has autism and I have known several people in school who have had mild forms of autism, and I can definitely say that some of them are truly brilliant, they just have a hard time showing it. I definitely believe that the world needs autistic minds more than most would think.
Grandin´s speech really showed the true meaning of autism. Most of the time people will look at kids with autism and say that they are slow when in reality they just have a certain way of learning. We need to help these kids grow at their potential at a younger age. Schools are taking away art and hands on classes and bringing in more standardized tests, when in reality these classes can help the autistic mind grow.
One idea that I strongly agree with her is "Mentors are Essential". We talked in class the other day about how the environment of where you learn can help, but it's mostly you that has to motivate yourself to learn and succeed. For autistic kids I feel that they need more help than others. So when she talked about mentors being essential, it made me think and I agree with her. For autistic kids it is hard to learn on their own. She said towards the end of the video while she was answering questions that between ages 2, 3, and 4 parents should be gets 20+ hours a week with their child one on one learning. Autistic kids depend on others to help them at the beginning until they know enough to be successful on their own. And I think who is in their early years of life really depends how successful they become later in life. Another part I agree with her on is when she said, "During internships you have to give them a specific task." I like it when people give me specific tasks so I see where she is coming from. When someone tells you to draw a picture the options are endless, which becomes very overwhelming. I can easily see why the more specific the better it is for autistic people and people in general. I enjoyed this video and learning the different types of brains (sensory, visual, etc.). I use to kind of feel bad for autistic people, but now after seeing this video I think highly of them. They have the potential to be so smart and successful at particular things, I don't know why I ever felt bad for them. This TED talk really opened my mind up on autism and how I feel it as a whole.
I really enjoyed this Ted talk. I learned that Autistic people's response time to smaller letters is way faster than a normal humans. There is a variety of different kind of Autism's: Mild to Intense. In this Ted talk, she explained that a 9-year-old with Autism can draw a more detailed and exact image than what a normal 9-year-old could. Also, an Autistic mind is really good at one thing but will struggle at something else. For example, you may be really good at art but you will struggle in Algebra. I learned that Autistic minds are very fixated. We need to find more aids, teachers, mentors that are willing to help these students with amazing minds to become just as successful as other people. Lastly, I learned that not everyone is the same and you have to be willing to go out of your way to help people become successful.
I think Temple Grandin did a great job of explaining how an autistic mind views and processes the world differently than a normal mind. I didn't know so many people famous for their accomplishments were autistic. With the right guidance and good mentors kids with autism can excel in a particular course and go on to do great things.
I thought the TED talk was very interesting and informative. Its very interesting to listen to the way others think in a different perspective than mine, I guess I have never thought about other ways to interpret ideas and learning any other way than the way that I do. I babysat an austic child for 2 years regularly and he one of the brightest and kindest people I have spoken to. He is very passionate about learning about animals, and not just the regular things people know. He knows every species, what they eat, how they orginated, and every detail you could imagine. I never understood how he knew so much detail on one specific thing, but after listening to Temple Gradin she helped me understand. Whenever people hear someone has autism negative connotations come with it, and that should be shifted away from. Truly the people with autism are the genius’s of the world and are the ones coming up with new ideas and inventions which is what our society strives off of.
The most surprising part of this video to me was that the speaker, Temple Grandin, is autistic. Nowadays there is a stigma when it comes to autism. The majority of people think that people with autism are low functioning and cannot thrive in society. Temple completely proves the opposite of that thought. It was interesting to hear her take on autism and how the education system may be to blame for not knowing the best way to teach these kids at a young age and help them become the best they can be. I liked hearing her side of autism because she knows it firsthand and probably can explain it better than a person who studies it for years. She explained it well and easily for anyone to understand. She also made it relatable by showing pictures and explaining how an autistic mind sees things differently. -Macy Maraugha
Grandin's advice concerning autism really opens up people's minds about the way they think and learn. Her personal experience with the example about the steeples shows that everyone has different pathways of getting/understanding information whether it be from an autistic mind or just a regular person. I agree with her point about getting students interested into exciting things via the teacher, I feel more eager to learn when the teacher makes cool and different ideas to teach it. I personally think TED talks are a relatable way for anyone to be taught and be motivated to learn new things.
I enjoyed listening to Temple Grandin's lecture because she really explained what autism kids are really thinking. Most people think of them as "slow" or "not as smart" when really they are just the opposite. I liked her example of when she was told to think of a church steeple she thought of all different kinds of churches from different places and even famous ones while the rest of us just sort of think of a plain steeple on a church. I also agreed with how teachers need to get kids involved in their learning in order to learn it better. I can connect to that because whenever I am doing something interesting or fun, it is easier for me to learn it and I am more likely to remember it. I also found it very interesting how some kids can be bad at Algebra but good at trig and other advanced classes but aren't able to take them because the school thinks they aren't ready to move on just because they are bad at Algebra.
I agree on how you describe what autism is. On how they are not "slow" they just have a different process of thinking things through. I also agree on how you said that teachers need to get kids involved in their learning to better themselves.
Kaylee West I enjoyed Grandin's speech about autism ans brain wiring. It was very informative by showing how one small difference can effect a person. She showed that someone with autism generally thinks more on the creative side then someone without it. Her speech could help inspire parents, teachers, families, and friends who know of someone with autism. It can even effect the ideas and thoughts of someone, even if they do not have a close bond with someone with autism. Her speech shows that even though someone may think differently or have a different way of doing things doesn't mean you can't get the same outcome.
I agree, this TED talk would be very beneficial to parents, teachers, and families. I think that they can take this information and use it for their own experiences or just to become more informed on the topic. I like how you worded that last sentence, it really does a good job at summarizing what her talk was about.
Madi Costanzo Grandin´s speech was very informative. So many different ideas were incorporated into this video. Grandin also showed how important it was to realize that autism is just a different way of thinking. I really liked how she explained the different thinking types, in which she was a visual thinker. She also stated that most people with autism have poor social skills. It is important that everyone treats autistic people the same as everyone, and realizes that they do have a potential to do really big things.
I learned many new useful information from the Temple Grandin's lecture. I learned that autistic people don't think in language, but rather through sensory. When they think of something they see it in pictures. Something as simple as a color can trigger a feeling due to specific experience. I also learned that autism is measured in different spectrums. They range from normal, intelligent people who just lack social skills to those who cannot process words. The best way to work on social skills would be to have a mentor that can teach you every day things like manners. The new piece of knowledge that stood out the most to me is that there are three different types of thinking: photo realistic visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, and verbal thinkers.
Brady Nowak I also thought it was interesting how autism leads to the extra sensory informantion. I liked how it showed the pictures of her brain and showed how much more the brain communicated with with the sensory image part of the brain compared to the control group.
I think that the diversity of different minds of children with autism that Temple Grandin talks about throughout this TED talk really does get over looked. She does an amazing job at describing how each one of them works and functions differently, but also how kids with these brains need a different approach educationally apposed to the normal brain of an ordinary adolescent. They need different learning techniques and this is so important to getting them to flourish and really show their potential. I love the way she explains this, it's so informative on the topic. I didn't know there was such a variety of different and unique brains with the makeup they contain. I think that autism is a lot of times viewed as an inconvenience, and this is so sad because it isn't a bad thing, it really is the opposite. Someone as herself that struggles with autism really emphasizes how complex her brain is. I think it helps to really get her point across since she has autism herself. I really enjoyed this TED talk, and I think that more people should watch this and become more aware and educated on the topic.
I also really admired that she was autistic herself. As you said, it really shows how complex the autistic brain is. I also loved the way she explains this topic because it is very passionate which helps her get each important point across.
Cassidy Heer I found this speech very informative. I had a little experience with a kid from my elementary school who had autism, but I never understood exactly how it worked for him. This speech made me think about how even with autism you can still be looked at as normal, for example at first I did not even realize that Temple had autism, I thought she just did research on autism. I found that amazing because she never let her autism hold her back. Having autism does not mean you will not be able to have a job when you are older anymore, because I feel that most people have become more accepting and more people with autism are working harder to be seen as normal. This was a very touching speech.
Jenna Thompson I found Grandin's speech to be very educational about how the autistic brain works. It's very interesting to learn about the way that autistic people think of pictures with many specific images popping up in their brain instead of one generic image. I think that there needs to be a change in the education system, to better help autistic students learn in the best way for how their brain works. Not everyone thinks the same way so not everyone should have to learn the same way. This video really helped me learn and understand more about how the autistic brain thinks differently and in more detail.
BRADY NOWAK Temple Grandins speech definitely gave me a different outlook of thoes with an autistic condition. It caught my attention when she talked about fixation=motivation. I know personally that if I am interested in a subject, I will learn it quickly. If teachers could find each fixation of a special needs child, they could teach them in a manner that is much more effective that a traditional style. I also liked her idea of retired workers becoming teachers. They can teach off experience, and experience is the best teacher.
I agree with you! We all have brains, but each works differently with how we process information!I think more parents, teachers, and any other individuals should watch this Ted Talk to get a better understanding.
I really enjoyed grandin’s lecture and thought it was very interesting. I loved that the speaker actually had autism. It shows that they can excel in this world, and no one should think they are not capable of doing so. Autism isn’t something we should put to the side and think they can’t do successful things. They can exceed as much as a “normal” person could, they just need the correct learning opportunities as we have. Instead of pushing the kids with autistic children’s ideas aside we should embrace their ideas and make something of it. I loved that she explained that no one is going to think the same. We all have our ways of learning best, and we need to teach kids with autism to understand how they can learn best. We need to understand the ways people think, because if we didn’t have different thinkers, we wouldn’t have some of the inventions and ideas we have today. I hope one day we see being different as a good thing. -Caylie Clements
Ally Costanzo Grandin's video was very interesting and informative. It showed how many people without knowing about autism see them as slower and not as smart, but that is not the case. In the video she explained how people who have autism can be just as smart as people without it. They just think in a different way by using a different part of the brain than people without autism. Like she said people with autism see and learn in a more visual way than verbal way. Different ways of thinking is what makes up the world, and people with autism have the potential to create new ideas to change the world. People with autism should not be treated any differently than people without it and teachers should find ways to teach using different learning styles to help the people with autism learn in an easier way. This video truly helped me understand more about autism and how people with it compare to the people without it.
I agree with how you said they think in just a different way and how they are seen as slower and not smart. Grandin gave many points to show that them thinking differently doesnt make them not as smart as any other person they just learn in a different way.
Britt Bardwell~ She amazes me! I thought it was so interesting to listen to a lecture from someone who has Autism. People with kids who have Autism think there kids are slower learners, because they don't process information like we do. In my opinion, they keep with us and are even ahead of the game when it comes to processing information. The brain is very delicate to begin with and being able to understand how an Autistic person thinks is incredible.Autism comes in many different levels and is based on how well it is worked with starting when the individual is younger. Some can memorize a book word for word, others prefer pictures! Either way, they could possibly be the next geniuses that run the world. It really does take all kinds of people to make the world go round.
Jeremy Zientek 7th-This video is giving a vision of how a brain with autism works. She did well comparing her brain to animals and other people also. Its crazy to think about other brains and how they work because we are all used to our brain and we focus on how our own brain works. The way she was describing it could almost make you able to put yourself in their shoes, and see the world how they see it by painting a very detailed picture of how a brain with autism works.
Temple Grandins ted talk really showed a different side of autism. In school it seems like we are taught that people with autism are not smart and have to be in special classes because they cant handle normal classes.I learned that people with autism are smart and that they just learn in a different way, they dont learn with taking notes everyday like most classes do they need hands on material and to learn with pictures and I think that people with autism should be hidden away because they are different,I think they could help us learn in a new way and help those who can learn only by taking notes etc.-bailey mehki
I agree completely. Not everybody learns best by taking notes. Some people needs hands on or visual, and some are just slower at processing information. Just because someone is faster at finding an answer doesn't mean they're more intellectual. It's about finding the answer. I also believe that autistic kids could really help some of us, because sometimes they're smarter than all of us.
John Kraine- I thought that was an excellent TED Talk and a few things stood out to me. First of all, the speaker was a very good public speaker despite having autism. I was surprised when she revealed she had autism. It made more sense when she said she had to learn social skills like being in a play. I just thought it was interesting that the way the brain is laid out can have such an impact on a persons thinking and thought patterns. Secondly, I thought it was interesting that she brought up that we are not educating these kids the right way. She points out that a special mentor is needed to help these kids succeed. It is also inferred that if these kids are taught correctly then they have an enormous potential to change the world.
I think that she was right too about how these kids have so much potential. I was surprised too that she told everyone that she has autism and is making a speech about it. I think that's what makes it such a good a talk because it's not just someone trying to understand to talk about it who doesn't have any personal experience. She's able to make more sense of what's going through these kid's minds because she personally knows, which makes this talk an thousand times better.
Rylee Grindle- I thought this lecture was very interesting. It's interesting to think how autism can range from very severe cases with no speech abilities to cases that the person ends up being an extreme genius. I also liked how the speaker has a form of autism, so she can share her personal stories. It always helps get a point across when you have real life examples to back it up. When she made the point on how when we are interested in a topic we learn really quickly, it got me thinking how true that actually was. When I'm interested in something, I want to know more about it and figure out how it works. So, I definitely agree that with the special needs classes we should be more focused on the individual rather than focusing on the class as a whole and having some not learn as well as the others.
I believe Grandin has a great message she is trying to tell. Autism shouldn't just be viewed as something that will hold you back. It's fascinating to me how many great minds could've been autistic if they were here today. Van Gogh's painting of Starry Night and how it relates to the laws of turbulence, how did his mind come up with that? She exposed me to many different ways of thinking, especially her way of thinking with pictures and all the great things she does for animals. I found it very interesting that her brain is also very different from a person that does not have autism. Her neuropathways were going directly towards her visual cortex and much larger than the controls.
This was a very interesting Ted talk. She made it more realistic by comparing it to simple things that people without autism. I've learned a lot with All Mules Matter with how autism works and how everyone is effected differently. That no two autistic people are the same. I agree with her that teachers do need to find better ways to connect with their students not just children with autism. It's very true what she said about how every autistic person has one thing that lights their interest. I feel like it's hard for teachers to use that in a classroom setting with 8 or 9 kids per class. And that's the same with just regular classroom settings too. It's also interesting the point she brought up that everyone ,especially autistic kids, see and learn differently. That everyone needs to bring that together to make the world a better place.
Very good points. There are many factors about classroom settings I wish I could change like class size. I think 20-24 is a better size to be able to get to everyone.
ebany- this video needs to more popular. I like how sh said that we need to think like them in order to know what autistic kids are thinking and going through. It is really interesting and bizarre of how all brains can be wired differently so of course it makes sense because they understand subject differently from others. I hope she continues to spread awareness!!
This speech was very informative. I have some experience with a little kid with autism and I never really understood how his brain worked. He is very smart in his own ways and is improving tremendously as he gets older and has mentors to help him. I like the way she used animals brains as a reference on how a visual brain works. The way she used her own brain picture and compared it to a person her age and not with autism was very helpful for understanding the difference. I think this video can help families and parents understand and help the kids who just need a mentor to help them. -joella griner
This TED Talk was very interesting in the way that it presented autism as something that makes you think differently but doesn't make you any different of a person. It was interesting how even though the speaker had autism, she still presented her information very well and was very informative on the topic. Her use of multiple images to show inside the brain of an autistic person really helped me grasp the information so much better. I liked how she explained that an autistic person can be just as smart or smarter than someone without autism as long as they are properly educated, conforming to their specific needs. I would encourage people who do not fully understand autism to watch this in order to achieve a better understanding.
I think this Ted talk was an eye-opener for most. Throughout the lecture, she brought up many points about working with different minds and I really liked that she brought it up because everyone learns differently and instead of trying to change them, we need to work with them and use them. She also made a comment about ¨using fixations¨. For example, she said, if a little boy is very interested in cars but is not very good at math, use the cars to help teach math, doing this keeps the mind engaged. She also mentioned, a few times, that autistic minds lack social skills and connections. Before watching this Ted talk, I did not know that the reason autistic children and adults behave the way they do, is because they lack these essential skills that most people take advantage of, much too often. I also liked when she emphasized that there is diversity in the minds of autistic children and not all think and learn the same.
Kolton McCombs- This Ted talk made me think of what it would be like to have Autism. It was very informative to what a kid or adult that has autism has to deal with. It also made me think that kids with autism may be smarter than kids without it. The video was absolutely wonderful in explaining what it is like to have autism. She was very great at explaining what the brain thinks like of a kid with autism and was very informative. I also have to agree with her when she says that people with autism play an important part in shaping our society.
Learning about how the brain of someone with autism is different than the brain of someone without autism is amazing. I learned that someone with autism pays very close attention to specific detail. There are many different types of thinkers and she made a great point about how the world needs all the different types of minds to work together. I feel now after watching this video that everyone should become more educated on how the mind of someone with autism works. This video could helps others understand how everyone's minds work differently. Some people assume people with autism are incapable of doing some thing but in reality, people with autism can change the world.
Nick Lucarelli I thought that this TED talk was great. A lot of people in the world don't really understand about autism. Autistic people can do a lot for the world. These people see things in ways that some of us don't, and that can be very useful at times. They can also do things that some of us can't do because our brain will not allow us to. They see things in different ways than we do and see stuff that some of us would have never seen. I think that everyone has their own purpose in life and you just have to find it. People with autism can help out society a great deal and this lady really explains how. This video will help others understand what autism really is and how it works. Some of the smartest people in the world are autistic and have created some of the greatest inventions. A lot of our greatest inventions we wouldn't have today if there wasn't autism, because people without it would have never saw it. These people see the world differently than others and just need to be taught in different ways, the ways that work for their brains.
I thought that the Tedtalk was very educational. The fact that she helped me have a greater understanding of the spectrum of Autism was absolutely incredible. I mean I have known for years about the different degrees of the disorder, but having someone who actually has it talk about it is awesome. My cousin is 10 and he lives with a more severe level of Autism then the women in the video, but how they both learn is actually the same. My cousin loves to play with legos and often tells me half way through his creation that it's something he has had floating in his head for quite some time. I always smile a little bit when he says that because I tend to forget ideas as fast as I remember them. I think that maybe kids like Logan actually understand the world around them better because they have a brain that is wired for the talent of paying attention to details. And a lot of the time the greatest discoveries are sitting right there in the details and we non-Autistic people miss that a lot. Sure, we can spot other things, but actually recognizing the importance of details is something that I think we struggle with as people who are not as gifted as my cousin is. The brain wiring matters in people with Autism because they are the ones who some teachers or others have a hard time engaging in learning. But, their brains can get fixated on things a lot more than others can, which means putting them up to a task and giving them details might just give the world a chance to unlock exciting and new information for the entire world to enjoy and learn from.
Laurel Gotha I enjoys watching this talk of Ted Talks, this young is full of so much knowledge and shares it with everyone. Her and people like her are so important in this day and age. People with autism dont think like people who dont have autism, they think more about the detail..and doesn't really look at the whole picture but really focus on the little picture. Which this helps with solving problems or building detailed buildings. I never knew that there was degrees of autism..like some are weak readers while other are great readers. Some have great memories or some cant remember anything. These people are super important on making the world a better place.
Grandin made me view autism completely differently. She caught my attention when she stated that it isn't just that kids with autism are slower, they just have extra wiring in their brain and that can make them lose a few social circuits, and that its a trade off for thinking and social. She also caught my attention when she states that the autistic mind tends to be a specialist mind, good at one thing, bad at something else. I was surprised when she stated that the autistic mind thinks in categories. She completely changed the way I think on the autistic mind. Grandin is a very inspirational women. -Owen Heuker

ReplyDeleteThis video really gave me an insight to what really goes on in the brain of a person with autism.
Delete-Kevin Lingle
i agree with jared that this video gave insight, and i agree that the worlds smartest people are often times autistic. he hit some of the points i was missing in my comment, and his comment really helped me to see that even people without autism can think differently, and how certain people remember certain parts of the speech better.
Delete-cole fornwald
I agree that this video provided a view into the mind of an autistic person. Before this video I wasn't aware of how many of the smartest people were autistic. Lastly, Kids with autism need programs to interest them in something that can lead them to a good career in the future.
DeleteI thought Grandin's speech was interesting in that she presented autism not as something that is detrimental and something to just be dealt with but as something that can even be beneficial.
ReplyDeleteSarah - You provided very good thoughts about the thinking patterns being different. What is"normal" anyway?
DeleteI agree wholeheartedly that it is nice to see a new take on autism. As someone with an uncle with down syndrome, I understand how stigmas are placed on those who think differently from the masses. Taking the work of people like Grandin and showing the ways in which different thinkers can contribute and help society can help us expand our society in the long run.
DeleteI agree with you. In her speech, Temple didn't mainly focus on what people on the autism spectrum can not do, she focused on their strengths and when in more detail about the differences between learning styles and I thought that was really great. Amber Wiederhold
DeleteI agree that there is no normal thinking pattern in the world, and that their should be a positive outlook on autism instead of looking at it as a disability.
DeleteI agree with you, Sarah. It's great she is trying to destigmatize autism. I liked how she went into depth on how to help them instead of just putting them in a classroom with things that do not interest them. Who wants to learn about things that don't interest them anyway?
DeleteI believe that many of the things that Grandin said were very good.
ReplyDeleteArianna - I like how you pointed out that it only works in a slightly different way. Many people dont think of it that way, but thats truly all it is. That was a very good way to put it. Your paragraph was well thought out and explained the video very nicely.
DeleteI agree with your statement our generation needs more options for other kids to learn in different ways.If minds were all the same their would be no specific detail to anything.By encouraging kids to learn by pictures and hands on it will expand our worlds thinking to a whole new level.I also feel as if autism helps the world create new ways of teaching and helping other students get a chance to excel in life and become successful.
DeleteI agree that children with autism should have the same education opportunities. I love your point saying that autistic students should be encouraged to explore the world in their way. I believe that if this is done we will have a lot more students being successful in school and this will help our society be better as a whole.
DeleteI agree with the idea that autistic children should be encouraged to explore the world in ways that make since to them.
DeleteI agree that not all learning is done in the same way, we even take learning tests in school to find out what type of a learner we are. Having different types of minds is important when looking at important issues so you can see everyone's perspective and ideas. I also agree that with the right assistance autistic kids will be able to have the same education as everyone else.
DeleteI agree with everything you said, there are so many people that think negatively about autism. They think differently just like everyone else in this world. We tend to push aside their learning disabilities instead of understanding how to teach them ways they can excel. Like you said, they contribute so many ideas to our society and we need to pay attention to that. -Caylie Clements
DeleteI think that her talk was very inspiring, and should be taken seriously by teachers across the country.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to keep classes like art, music and vocational. These classes are considered electives and unfortunately are typically the first ones cut.
DeleteI agree that the process of helping autistic kids to flourish starts with the schools. It seems like many kids with mental disabilities aren't given the patience and time they need.
DeleteI agree that schools should not be getting rid of art classes because some people enjoy art and it really speaks to them. If kids do not have art they might not be able to do things in the future, like developing certain skills.
Delete-Kylie Carnicom
i feel that this person is right about autistic peoples and brain wiring, and that maybe if teachers and educators focused on teaching these people according to what they are good at they could succeed like she said, its just a dream to think that all autistic children could succeed like she said but there could be the next big tech entrepreneur out there who just thinks different however fails because their teachers didn't care.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that teachers should help these kids out and adjust their teaching styles for them. I think if they would bring in mentors, like she said in the speech, then a lot more autistic kids could be widely successful.
DeleteI Also agree that teachers should adjust their teaching styles so that autistic children can learn and achieve more. There could also be more teachers to help these kids because they think and see things differently than we do
DeleteI thought her ideas and feelings about autism were very strong and she really wanted people to listen to what she had to say about it.
ReplyDeleteThere is a movie that has been made about her life. Yes she is passionate about helping other understand autism and how the brain works.
DeleteI agree with you about people who are different and can still accomplish many great things! The best people are the ones that are different, not the followers.
DeleteAfter watching the video I realized how different people and minds think. It's interesting that people that have autism think with visual thinking and learn visually. If we didn't have all of the different types of minds and thinking in the world then we wouldn't have been able to create many of the things we have today. People with autism really put a different perspective on learning and thinking which the normal brain wouldn't understand. -Kassie Brandon my computer wouldn't let me sign in
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that people with autism have brought many great things to this world. We as a whole, forget that they are people too and don't take their ideas seriously. Grandin did say that Einstein would be diagnosed with autism today.
DeleteI agree that it is interesting learning about how autistic brains think differently, and all the different types of thinking that the autistic brain can do.
DeleteI agree with you, autistic kids and adults really help me understand how fortunate we are. They have developed a lot of different solutions and have developed a lot of different products. Their specific detail they use helps them invent things and put different pieces together.

ReplyDeleteAutism is a visual leaning system the way they think is by pictures and more details then the normal brain.
ReplyDeleteScience has come a long way in establishing the autism spectrum. The information continues to become available as we learn more.
DeleteKids like these are the ones who will solve some of the worlds problems. They are very important to society.
DeleteI agree, everyone learns different and it is especially hard with a disability like autism. Most kids with autism have the same issue with having to have everything be the same. I strongly agree with your point that we need to give people the right tools for how the learn.

DeleteI am glad things are working out for your brother. Sometimes growth and experiences can help.
DeleteI agree entirely with her opinion and stances on autism and brain wiring.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that some people view people with autism as negative. We all have special gifts to share.
DeleteI agree that people perceive autism negatively,it should be more of a positive thing or just another way to that people think rather than a disability.
DeleteI agree with your comment, many people believe that autism is bad in reality it is not. They give us many thoughts and ideas that people without autism could not. People just think differently and the people on the spectrum are just a set of people that have one set of thinking and there are other sets of people that have other different ones.
DeleteThis video made sense to me in the fact that I have an autistic cousin who thinks almost entirely in patterns and is usually focused on one thing at a time.
ReplyDelete-Kevin Lingle
Thank you for sharing a personal story about your cousin.
DeleteIt´s weird how it works, I have an older cousin and he has downs syndrome, he went to whitmer and he graduated but since his mind wasn´t working as fast as the other kids he graduated a couple years ago but it was 3 or 4 years after his class graduated and everything in his life has to do with barney, he only plays with barney.
DeleteI never knew that people with autism could have such brilliant minds.
ReplyDeleteI feel like i have a better understanding and knowledge of the autistic mind than I did before I watched this Ted talks.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I have a better understanding of autism after watching this TED talk. The scans of the brain also helped give a better understanding, as I was able to see the difference and compare. I also didn't know some autistic people can't talk at all. It is super important for this video to be shared to raise awareness and inform people that people with autism just have a different way of thinking and that they still have potential.
DeleteI found this video to be very interesting because all different kinds of people can relate to this.
ReplyDeleteDo the parents or you ever try to find what he likes to do and try to ever do that with him?
DeleteDo the parents ever tell you what he likes to do? Have they tried to intrigue him into sports, or what he likes to do?
DeleteThe autism spectrum of diagnosis is bigger now because of research and increasing understandings from the medical and scientific communities.
DeleteAutism is a subject that everyone needs to learn more about, and get to understand it.
ReplyDeleteAnimals think with sensory information and put that information into categories.
DeleteI loved her talk about autism.
ReplyDeleteIt puts a different prospective on our lives. I am not sure I would be as observant either.
DeleteEli Stevens
ReplyDeleteI think that it is cool that some autistic people actually think in pictures.
DeleteShe said in this video how schools aren't helping the autistic learn in the way their brain works.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, our school has not cut those important classes out which is very beneficial for everyone especially autistic students. They are very smart and just need to have the information brought to they in a different way.
DeleteYes David i agree with you on the aspect of how schools need to be more active in making sure they allow students to explore what interests them. Our school does do a good job of this with out many ceramics, auto shop, and computer classes.
DeleteTemple´s lecture on autism made me realize that some children need a different way of learning in order to excel. In order for children to do their work, teachers need to be showing students interesting things. Also children with autism need help in socializing, because they are so brilliant and their brain is not wired correctly to do both. Grandin also stated that schools now a days are taking away the hands on classes, and children with special needs need those classes to learn.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about how children needs hands on learning classes to learn because some of the smartest people in the world had autism and they had some type of hands on skills which made them so good at what they did.
DeleteI agree with you on the way teachers teach. They don't take in consideration that the minds and brains are wired differently and not everyone can learn the same way.
DeleteI completely agree that teacher's need more of different learning techniques that accommodate autistic needs. Autistic people can be very intelligent if they have the right learning styles that fit their needs.
DeleteAutism is not a topic many people know a lot about, that needs to change.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's beneficial to us and everyone to learn more about autism. People automatically assume that it's a terrible debilitating problem when really these people just think and understand things differently than us. I think it's good for us to understand that and be able to understand people with autism better.

ReplyDeleteI thought it was really interesting to hear that a lot of schools have gotten rid of Drafting, auto shop and other art classes for autistic kids in schools, but here at Bedford we still have these types of classes available for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with what you said because I don't think many people are aware how the autistic brain works and how important hands on learning is to them. Hopefully technology will advance in the future and better help people with the disease.
DeleteI really liked Temple Grandin speech, I felt it very informational and it kept me interested the whole time.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with tara that autism is not a disability. We today treat it so much as a disability when we need to be treating it as an opportunity for new ways of thinking and problem solving.
DeleteI agree with Tara due to the point about Autism being more of an ability rather than a disability. Also, the world would not be the same without these people because they have changed the world.
DeleteGrandin's lecture gave me a better understanding about autism than i had before. Also i think she failed to recognize the autistic kids who aren't as "nerdy" and should of emphasized more on what to do to help understand them
ReplyDeleteI relate on your first comment.
DeleteI think that schools need to find a fit to the kids learning styles too. Every kid learns differently and teachers need to help each kid.
DeleteI agree that schools need to broaden their teaching styles with autistic kids to fit their needs. Every person learns different and deserves teachers that will take the time to find what works best with them.
ReplyDeleteI completly agree that we need to talk about this more and have people understand how their brain works. Teacher need to take the time how you learn!

ReplyDeleteI thought that Grandin's speech was very informative.
DeleteI agree it changed my perspective as well, and I think that autism people are capable of accomplishing great things. Autistic people just need more social skills taught to them in school to learn how to share their ideas with the world.
DeleteJust like you, I didn't realize that famous icons like you listed were affected with autism. That helped me gain a better understanding of how people with that disability could help further improve society, just as everybody should be able to. It takes away the emphasis on helping improve ways to help the general population learn but rather the group of people who are almost starting to get almost left behind or forgotten.
DeleteI agree that every child, student, and adult with autism or related situations are a huge element in creating a better world. When a person with a normal brain cannot solve it, they will and they will most likely do a better job. they see things for how they are instead of trying to go over the top.
DeleteI agree that schools need to work on social skills with autistic kids so that they can interact with more people. I also agree that teachers need to help with the fixation and find out what their students like to help them learn. Autistic minds are very complex and they need help to get a better understanding of certain things so the teaching staff at schools should be closely evaluated for their help.
ReplyDeleteI agree that more teachers should be evaluated before being able to call a classroom their own. Teachers should be able to teach in multiple ways to help different types of minds, or they should have multiple teachers in classrooms and they each should be given students that they know how to teach.
DeleteI also agree, I think that if we got more people to know about how people with autism learned we could have a better understanding of them.
DeleteAll through my life, I have known some of the effects of autism and the range of ways people with it can be affected.
ReplyDeleteI can't agree more on the fact the schools need to work more on helping the autistic kids be apart of what we do on our every day basis and less on the fact that they are different. Nobody thinks the same whether you have autism or not so why single them out?
DeleteI agree, I think that it's great that people are starting to understand that these kids who might have something like autism could be geniuses with the right style of teaching that is accommodated to them. Grandin did a great job with visual representations of how other kids might learn and see things.
DeleteKyle Kamm
ReplyDeleteI think that this is super cool because I related to a large part of this.
I am glad this Ted Talk gave you some insight into yourself and your cousin! Wiring of the brain can be shaped by many things.
DeleteI thought that Grandin's speech was very informative and straight forward.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it was a very informative and straight forward. You have a very good point on how all people have the same brain. I found that the way they learn is very interesting compared to normal brains
DeleteI think that Grandin’s speech really gave me more of an understanding of Autism.
ReplyDeleteHunter Winters
ReplyDeleteI thought that Grandin's speech was very inspiring and informative.
I agree with you completely, its sad to watch kids that accel in art and music not being able to do something they are good at.
DeleteKaylee West
DeleteI agree with you.
ReplyDelete-Reagan Schmus
Grandin's speech made me thinks about autism in a completely new light. I have always been taught about how we learn differently but never about how we think. It was very cool to learn about the visual, pattern, and word thinkers. I have only heard people talking about autism as a bad thing but for some very successful people it is a great thing to have autistic habits. I really agree that we need to have more elective classes in the high school because how are kids suppose to learn about all of the different jobs and if they would be suited for them or not. This speech was very informative and it makes me now think of autism as a different way of thinking but not bad at all.
ReplyDeleteIt made me think about it completely different too. I thought I knew some what about this condition but this video has shown the parts I havn't been taught, just like you said being taught about how we learn differently. I like how you said we need to have more elcetive classes and I could not agree more, that is a huge point that is lacking today.
DeleteThis speech really helps to explain how autistic brains work differently, and the different types of autistic thinking.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this comment in that teachers need to understand that autistic children do not process information the same way that a normal thinking child would. We need to find ways to meet every childs expectation in order to create productive members of society.
DeleteGrandin's speech was extremely eye-opening.
ReplyDeleteAlex Zedan
DeleteI agree completely with this. My cousins are often made fun of at their school for not being able to communicate as well as others. It was nice to see this video and know that its because they are thinking in a different way.
Very good points about just because someone is quiet or reserved does not mean that he/she should be ignored or taken lightly. this is about respecting everyone.
DeleteThis video gave me a good incite about the autistic brain.
ReplyDeleteSophie Fallouh
ReplyDeleteGrandin spoke about things that I feel are not talked about enough.
DeleteI thought that Grandin's talk was very good in the way she explained it and also just the major concept of it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about Grandin being very informative in how she explained how people with autism think in different ways and how people without autism might think that the people with autism can't do as much but in fact they can do the same amount of stuff or more than what people without it can do. They are just as smart and can bring different, great ideas into the world.
DeleteI agree with what you said about how a lot of people view autism as a set back. Like she explained, being autistic just means their brains are wired differently. Just because we see things more verbally than visually doesn't make us any smarter. It's just a different way to view the world.
DeleteHer speech was very inspiring because she talked about how the world needs different minds to work together.
ReplyDelete-Kylie Carnicom

ReplyDeleteAfter watching this video i gained a whole new perspective on how autistic minds work.
ReplyDeleteAlex Zedan
ReplyDeleteAfter watching this video I feel like I have a better knowledge on autistic minds.
DeleteWhat Alex said is very true. From this video many people would pick up a whole new perspective for people that are in their family or school. If you keep trying to make an effort with them they eventually will start to make one back and that's very important to learn. Being patient with them will benefit your relationship with them and their learning abilities.

ReplyDeleteI really liked this speech.
Having the mind of an autistic kid is very detailed and we are like them in some way
ReplyDeleteI agree with this post entirely.
DeleteThis video has changed my perspective on people with autism completely. -Seth Dolan
ReplyDeleteThis video has changed the way I look at it also. I really liked how she said that without autism in the world that mankind would be sitting outside their cave trying to start a fire. Which I agree with because as you said a bunch of great minds that have really impacted world history and mankind have had autistic habits.
DeleteJohn Kraine-
DeleteI think it is interest that people are moving away from viewing autism as just a disability and now see it as an alternative thinking condition. I also didn't know that many geniuses were autistic. The fact that people think in drastically different ways which has moved humanity forward is very interesting.
Meagan Walker
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Grandin's speech because she made key points about autism that we don't think about.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it is very important that Autistic kids need a mentor with them. Since they do get attached to one thing it is important that someone with more experience helps them with other learning styles and to help them grow in different areas of their life.

ReplyDeleteTemple Grandins speech gave me a better out look on other peoples way of thinking.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Temple Grandin's lecture and believed it to be extremely informative while still holding my attention.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you completely. Autism is looked down upon as something that is a hindrance but after watching that talk in some ways its a benefit. People with autism can think in a way that people without it cannot and having them in this world has definitely brought a lot of positive changes.
Deletei thought that gardins speech was very interesting, and i i have known that autistic people have a certain thing about them that helps them learn in a special way , and i agree that they need to have people who specialized in certain things to help them sothey can fully be aware of their potential.
ReplyDeleteI agree that autistic kids do not see the potential they have because they focus only on what they are bad at and people, such as teachers, only try to help improve the child in that one area, but they really should be teaching how to improve on what they are good at and use it to their advantage.
DeleteI really liked this video because I learned that things like autism and aspergers are a lot more common than we think. People who sometimes struggle with social skills could possibly have slight autism and just need to learn things differently. Some of these people could actually become great minds if they are motivated with the right learning style and teachers/mentors. It's really interesting how many different types of learning styles people have.
ReplyDeleteI highly enjoyed this lesson and believed that Temple Grandin is an example of how autistic people can be successful by using the gifts that they have.
ReplyDeleteWe all have something we can offer to society. We just need to figure out what we like and are good at.
DeleteFirst I would like to say before this video I did not know that Temple was autistic, as I thought she was just a specialist in the field.
ReplyDeleteKnowing two people in my family with autism, my sister and cousin, I can easily relate to what Temple Grandin was saying.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you found this video interesting and were able to relate to it. thank you for sharing.
DeleteI find it very interesting that there are 3 different types or learners on the autism spectrum.
ReplyDeleteI really think what she is doing is awesome.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on so many levels. Autism I feel is a touchy subject that some people are afraid to talk about because they may feel sorry for them. But what Temple does is she shows us all the valuable things autism has and can bring to this world, and I find her speech so educational for us.
DeleteI agree with you that not everyone thinks the same way and that schools need to figure out ways to fit the needs for everyone. Also, my sister is going to school to become a teacher for Autistic kids and I think it's an amazing thing.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Temple Grandin's lecture very much.

ReplyDeleteThis speech really opened my eyes. I am very happy I got to watch this video, because it really gave me so much knowledge that I may be able to use down-the-line of my life.
i appreciate that you shared specifics from the talk that you found interesting. I hope you will be able to apply it.
DeleteI really enjoyed listening to Temple Grandin's speech about Autistic minds and how they work.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why we do not have a peer listening program anymore. That was a great point you brought up. Does the program Mules Matter act like peer listening?
DeleteI thought that the video was great and Temple Grandin did a very good job with explaining what its like to have autism.

ReplyDeleteI think that this lecture has information that everyone should learn.
ReplyDeleteOne idea that I strongly agree with her is "Mentors are Essential".
ReplyDeleteLynsey Spotts
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this Ted talk.
ReplyDeleteI thought the TED talk was very interesting and informative.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people with autism are genius's of the world because they really are and if they weren't around where would we be at technologically.
DeleteThe most surprising part of this video to me was that the speaker, Temple Grandin, is autistic.
ReplyDeleteGrandin's advice concerning autism really opens up people's minds about the way they think and learn.
ReplyDeleteAshley Manore
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed listening to Temple Grandin's lecture because she really explained what autism kids are really thinking.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Grandin's speech about autism ans brain wiring.
DeleteMadi Costanzo
ReplyDeleteGrandin´s speech was very informative.
ReplyDeleteBrady Nowak
DeleteI also thought it was interesting how autism leads to the extra sensory informantion.
ReplyDeleteI also really admired that she was autistic herself. As you said, it really shows how complex the autistic brain is. I also loved the way she explains this topic because it is very passionate which helps her get each important point across.
DeleteCassidy Heer
ReplyDeleteI found this speech very informative.
Jenna Thompson
ReplyDeleteI found Grandin's speech to be very educational about how the autistic brain works.
BRADY NOWAK
ReplyDeleteTemple Grandins speech definitely gave me a different outlook of thoes with an autistic condition.
DeleteI really enjoyed grandin’s lecture and thought it was very interesting.

ReplyDeleteGrandin's video was very interesting and informative.
DeleteBritt Bardwell~ She amazes me!
ReplyDeleteJeremy Zientek 7th-This video is giving a vision of how a brain with autism works.
ReplyDeleteTemple Grandins ted talk really showed a different side of autism.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely.
DeleteJohn Kraine-
ReplyDeleteI thought that was an excellent TED Talk and a few things stood out to me.
I agree that I thought she was a very good speaker. She makes very good points about autism and how she has been able to succeed.
DeleteI think that she was right too about how these kids have so much potential.
DeleteRylee Grindle- I thought this lecture was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI believe Grandin has a great message she is trying to tell.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very interesting Ted talk.
ReplyDeleteVery good points. There are many factors about classroom settings I wish I could change like class size. I think 20-24 is a better size to be able to get to everyone.
Deleteebany- this video needs to more popular. I like how sh said that we need to think like them in order to know what autistic kids are thinking and going through. It is really interesting and bizarre of how all brains can be wired differently so of course it makes sense because they understand subject differently from others. I hope she continues to spread awareness!!
ReplyDeleteThis speech was very informative.
ReplyDeleteThis TED Talk was very interesting in the way that it presented autism as something that makes you think differently but doesn't make you any different of a person.
ReplyDeleteI think this Ted talk was an eye-opener for most.

ReplyDeleteThis Ted talk made me think of what it would be like to have Autism.

ReplyDeleteI thought that this TED talk was great.

ReplyDeleteI enjoys watching this talk of Ted Talks, this young is full of so much knowledge and shares it with everyone.
