  10. 1. How are leeches used in medicine?

Leeches used to be used during bloodletting, when doctors tried to balance the body's fluids. Today, they are used to heal skin grafts by removing the blood that pooled and recirculating blood back to the veins. As well as, helping reattach fingers and other body parts. As the leech feeds on the patient's blood it prevents clotting and promotes good blood flow.

    2. What is unique about how the leeches are able to obtain blood that is helpful to patients?

Leeches produce a natural anticoagulant, otherwise known as a blood thinner, that keeps their bodies lighter than expected. When you attach a leech to a patient going through limb attachment, the leech releases this anticoagulant into their blood stream. This allows for continuous blood flow, which is necessary for this procedure to be a success.

    3. Would you be willing to use a leech as a treatment? Please explain.

I would be willing to use a leech as treatment if the need arose. I feel that if it is going to help me, no matter how gross, it is necessary to try it. This seems to have many benefits in these procedures and if I one day need to reattach my finger, I think I would have no issue using a leech. Especially if it means I would get to keep my finger.

    4. What other creepy crawlies can be used for medicine?

Some doctors apply disinfected maggots to wounds to try to kill the disease. This treatment also stimulates the healing process. Soldiers that had infested wounds were much better off than the soldiers who didn't.
